I am speaking as a BIG fan of the orginal “Sinister”, but I feel like “Sinister 2” (though I enjoyed “Deputy So and So” being made the protagonist) was missing the most important part of what made the original great. The score. Every time I listen to it, even sans movie, it gives me chills. I don’t know how Christopher Young managed to capture the sound of evil but he did. So, I can’t for the life of me figure out why they chose not use more of the original bone-chilling score until the big denouement. As a result, it ended up just being a run-of-the-mill horror flick. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, check out the full, hella-creepy “Sinister” soundtrack below.
It’s still got some decent jump-scares and gory gross-out moments, so, if that’s your thing, it’s worth the price of admission.
Here are both the trailers for comparison/reference.
