There is still such a huge stigma around mental illness. But, there is no shame in admitting that you have one. Taking steps toward curing/managing it is NOT weak. It’s smart and it’s strong.
I have severe anxiety and moderate depression. Have since I was a little kid. It took me a long time to accept that I needed help because I thought I could be “stronger” than whatever was “wrong” with me. After years of being scared and miserable, I now take medication and see counselors regularly. I’ve never been better or stronger.
If you know someone (and you probably do) who suffers from a mental illness, be kind, be open, be accepting. You don’t have to understand what they are going through to be compassionate.
But, don’t take my word for it. Here are some familiar faces speaking about their own experiences with mental illness.
