The Ice Bucket Challenge is something that was started a few weeks ago by Peter Frates, a 29 year old former Division I college athlete that has been living with ALS since 2012.
His goal was to simply raise awareness for ALS, the neurodegenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. And when challenged, the idea was to either drench yourself in an ice bucket or simply donate $100 to ALS. What’s happened is that most people are actually doing both.
ALS has been sending out press releases each day, updating the total raised. As of this writing, $70.2 million has been raised and it’s still going strong.
