Beer...It's Good For You?! |
|
Health tip
|
Since the Superbowl was yesterday and some of us may have indulged in a couple of cold ones, I thought, why not take the focus away from the calories we drank and focus on the GOOD in beer! Everyday this week, I will post a health benefit of beer.
It May Prevent Osteoporosis: Researchers have found that most beer contains enough silicon to benefit bone health. (Past studies have found that women who are light to moderate beer drinkers have better bone density than non-beer drinkers.) Now don't go thinking slamming a case is going to make you a healthier person!! You should only have about two a day and you want to opt for Ales and Pale Ales, which have higher levels of the bone-bolstering silicon than darker varieties.

With this last week of torture.. er.. I mean COLD, DRY weather I figure we should be talking about how to keep our skin healthy... I found some great tips from Woman's Magazine that I thought I'd share. First off, most people don't fixate on dry skin the way they do acne or cellulite, but dry skin makes us look older AND and in some cases, your health can me affected. Constant dryness can cause microscopic cracks that invite bacteria into your body, potentially resulting in a staph infection... now that's worse case scenario, but still another reason to take care of the largest organ on our body.
Here are 7 great tips to keep you smooth and supple
1) Baby your skin- Swap Exfoliating everyday with using a baby's wash cloth with cream soap or even milk three times a week. Less harsh on skin and keeps it fresh moist.
2) Mask it Up- Twice a week, crack open a fresh aloe vera leaf and rub a thick layer of the sap onto clean skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse off.
3)Beat indoor heat -Your skin goes into repair mode while you sleep, but drying indoor heat can cause cells to shed too fast, resulting in rough, flaky skin. Get some moisture back into the air by either using a humidifier in your bedroom or get the same effect by leaving a pot of water close to your radiator. humidifiers—a Boston palm, bamboo fern, or Ficus alii—and place it in your bedroom. These plants transpire and increase water vapor in the air, explains Fusco.
4)Love your lids- Thin and fragile, the skin on your eyelids is the most dryness-prone area of your face. If your eyelids are red, scaly, or itchy, swipe a hydrocortisone cream over them (remove makeup first) a few times a day to help hydrate and reduce redness.
5)Shampoo and condition first -When you wash your hair, suds from your shampoo and conditioner inevitably run over your body and face, depositing a film caused by the strong cleansers and heavy moisturizers found in many hair products. Lathering up with a mild, unscented bar soap or body wash afterward will rinse away those moisture-zapping, itch-inducing chemicals and leave skin supple.
6)Soak smart -You'd think soaking in a tub would hydrate your skin. But NOPE—sitting in a bath actually breaks down your body's natural oils, causing water to seep out of your skin. So, keep your tub water lukewarm (hot water is drying) and add a few drops of pure almond, wheat germ, grape seed, or apricot kernel oil to your bath.
7)DIY hand treatment - A DIY hot olive-oil treatment will instantly soothe dry, cracked, old-lady-looking hands. Microwave half a cup of extra-virgin olive oil in a microwave-safe bowl for 20 seconds, then massage the oil into your hands and cuticles. Cover each hand with a plastic bag, soak for five minutes in a bowl of warm water to help the oil absorb even better, then remove. (Don't wash your hands afterward. If they feel greasy, just blot with a towel.)
9)Go for oats - Dry skin is usually itchy. To combat the icthy, look for body washes, soaps, and lotions that contain oatmeal. |

So, are you like most British Columbians with the New Year goal of losing weight and getting healthy? Being active for me, is always a goal and sometimes I do really well and sometimes.. well.. I don't and I decide to go for a nap instead. They say getting to gym is the HARDEST part, which is true, but if you're new the gym.. trying to figure out what to DO is also tough. How about you try Cycling!
Here's why:
A study of more than 18,000 women over a period of 16 years found that those who biked as few as five minutes a day gained less weight than those who didn't ride. That's because even a casual ride is a great muscle strengthening workout and a great cardio workout. A 135-pound woman can burn about 500 calories in an hour of cycling at a comfortable speed. And each pedal stroke works your entire lower body and your core, sculpting a tight body. So if you want to be "Tight for 2012", cycling is a good way to go!
