Chemo can cause major mouth pain
Chemo can cause major mouth pain

Hey!!

I have a family member going through Chemo and I know that certain side effects take place that can make the experience even worse than it has to be. When I came across this article I thought it may help you out if you or someone you know is getting ready to go through chemo. Chemo can really wreak havic on your mouth, but with proper oral care before, during and after cancer treatments you can minimize your risk...Here's what you can do:

First, find a dental oncologist. These are dentists that specialize in cancer patients. We do have a few here in Prince George ask your dentist and I'm sure they can guide you. Once you find one, then have them speak with your doctor to come up with the proper treatment plan.

Then, get a complete dental evaluation. If the dentist finds ANY problems take care of them one month before you start treatment. Once radiation starts your mouth won't be able to heal as well.

Once treatment starts make sure you practise good oral care. Brush after every meal with a perscription grade toothpaste, and drink plenty of water. This increases saliva production which keeps bacteria away.

Everyday give your mouth a once over and check to see if you have any swelling or redness contact your dentist if you see any.

I hope this helps the process.
