  • Unemployment Rate Drops Again
    The unemployment rate was down about a little more than half a point last month, falling to 12.3 %.  While its down over the month, its up almost 5 percentage points from a year ago.  Labour Market Analyst Jeannine Usalcas says the number of people employed last month was about the same as February 2009.  She says that because people are settling for part time jobs to remain in the workforce.  The Cariboo region is seeing similar numbers while the provincial rate fell four-tenths of a point and the national rate was trimmed by a tenth of a point.

  • Former Premier Brings HST Fight To Northern BC
        Former Premier Bill Vander Zalm brings his Fight HST campaign to Prince George today.
        Vander Zalm is trying to raise awareness for the Citizen Initiative petition he's launching on April 6th.   If the petition gets the signatures of 10 percent of eligible voters in each of B.C.'s 85 electoral ridings, the Campbell government's plan to initiate the Harmonized Sales Tax would have to go to referendum.
        Vander Zalm's public meeting goes tonight at 7 at UNBC.

  • Police Hunt Underway for 26 Year Old PG Resident

    A search is underway for a Prince George man police consider dangerous.  26 year old Chad Douglas Berry is accused in a series of sexual assaults and stabbings early Thursday morning.  A warrant has been issued for his arrest.  Berry is facing 17 charges including three charges of aggravated sexual assault, one charge of sexual assault with a weapon and a charge of sexual assault.   The incidents occurred in the 23 hundred block of Oak Street.  Two women were treated for stab wounds but are expected to recover.  If you spot Berry, RCMP say you should call 911 immediately.

    They aspire to be the next generation keeping the peace in this country. The
    8th annual Prince George RCMP Youth Academy is underway this week. 33
    students from Northern BC are taking part in the eight day program.

  • Garbage Can Shortage(VIDEO)
    You'll flip your lid waiting for a small garbage can. A recent spike in
    demand means there's a wait list with the City. There are a couple of reasons
    for that, one of which local environmentalists hope will continue.

  • Bottled Water Free Day(VIDEO)
    Today is Canada's first Bottled Water Free Day. Students at UNBC are taking
    part. They're hoping to spark discussion on the benefits of tap water and
    perhaps becoming a bottled water free school.

  • PG Air Public Meeting(VIDEO)
    We can't live without it. It's air and the quality of this city's air was the
    subject of a public meeting last night. About 250 people were on hand for the
    meeting. They wanted to hear what Ministry officials had to say about
    dangerous formaldehyde levels in that neighbourhood nearly two years ago.
    Many were demanding to know why, in 2010, nothing has been done.

  • Northern Teens Attend RCMP Academy
    33 northern B.C. high school students are spending spring break at Kelly Road Secondary School. They're not doing regular school work, though. Special Constable Davy Greenless says the teens are attending the RCMP's Youth Academy, getting a feel for what its like to attend Depot and be a Mountie. He says the week-long event gives the youths a feel for whether they want to go into policing. The Youth Academy wraps up tomorrow.

  • City Experiences Garbage Can Delay
    If you hope to drop the size of your garbage can to a small bin, be prepared to wait. The manager of Solid Waste Services, Aiden Kelly says there's quite a significant time delay in getting the small can. Kelly says the demand is partly generated by a desire to save money, but also because people are starting to recycle more. It's a trend the Executive Director of REAPS, Terri McClymont has noticed. McClymont says the Regional District of Fraser Fort George will soon be introducing bans on certain items in the landfill, like cardboard.
